SUPPLIERS

You can find more information about my suppliers here…

Having trusted and high quality supplier and manufacturers of materials, paint and sundries is one of the most important aspects of carrying out any business enterprise.
The UK is very fortunate to enjoy market leading established businesses as well as emerging companies and challenging new competitors.
Below is a list of businesses and brands that I tend to favour and stand out from the crowd with a little mention of why I like them !
My choices are all top manufacturers, brands, business links and art related websites.

Tikkurila
A Finnish paint brand that has broken into the UK market in recent years with a few major outlets and spreading all over the British Isles, proving to have a fine track record, especially with the pigment contents of their paints and coverage. I have used most of their products, and often turn to them for specialist advice. As we know, the Nordic climate is unforgiving especially to exterior products. The paint terminology takes some getting used to, but the products are of exceptional quality.

Wrights of Lymm
I turn to this company time and again for their extremely specialised painting products and sundries. There aren’t many businesses that still deal with such traditional materials and supplies, but these guys fly the flag in the UK. Always helpful on the phone and with an extensive range of gold leaf and gilding supplies, unusual brushes, niche varnishes and products that you just don’t easily find anywhere else. I’ll look at their site when I know I need a tricky product.

Polyvine
Now this may seem an obvious and even popular product in the home DIY market, since their products are available at B&Q, BUT… i have been using their scumble glazes (with particular acknowledgment for the tropical scumble), varnishes and mediums for donkeys years. With the global trend moving towards eco products and away from traditional oil based finishes (which we all know are by far superior, to achieve a uniform and deeply layering glazed finish), Polyvine have outlasted other brands to push themselves to the front of the market. I always have a few bottles of scumble glaze and dead flat varnish and gloss varnish on my van. Quick drying and hard wearing / resilient.

General Supplier rant!
Now – I’ve been doing all kinds of decorating and painting jobs for about 30 years, and I can safely say that there are pros and cons to every brand. Not everyone gets it right with every product.
The biggest bug bear I have is when it comes to trade accounts. I have had them, lost them, been turned down for them, and STILL find it difficult to make any kind of deal with the established companies. It’s as if they want to make it difficult for the self employed painter to make a living and a profit and still use their products.
Notably – Dulux Trade and Crown Trade. My local outlets have for years been unwilling to give me any favourable terms, which is why I simply don’t go to either of them anymore!
